Based on the ideological concepts of an ethnically homogeneous "united socialist nation" and uniform "Bulgarian national roots", in late 1984 the communist government of Bulgaria launched a head-on attack to wipe out the identity of the ethnic Turkish minority in the country. After the practical failure of the assimilation campaign, known as the Regeneration Process, the communist regime decided to get rid of the ethnic Turkish community by other means. In the summer of 1989 about 350,000 ethnic Turks were allowed to cross the border into Turkey under the pressure of rising nationalism in Bulgaria. This book offers 11 viewpoints on the origin, the course and the implications of what was the most massive push of ethnic violence in Bulgaria in the 20th century.
