A novel about Bulgarian freedom-fighter Vassil Levski (1837-1873). It tells about Levski's ill-fated love for a woman and looks into unknown aspects of the Ottoman court trial in Sofia which led to his execution by hanging. The author Neda Antonova notes that historians have failed for 144 years to answer the questions: Why was Levski sentenced to death for murder, based on the testimony of only one witness? Why did the Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire demand at the very beginning of the trial that Levski be hanged? Why was the Russian diplomat, Count Nikolay Ignatyev, so pleased with the sentence, describing it as "the happy ending of the Sofia affair" in a report to the government in St Petersburg? Antonova has authored historical novels and plays, some of which have been translated into Russian, French, Polish, and Czech.
