The novel by a contemporary Ukrainian author Pavlo Zahrebel'nyi describes the life of the Kyivan Rus during Volodymyr Monomakh's rule, when the first bridge over the Dnieper River was built. It tells of people who looked after the bridge and protected it. The life of one of them (Markerii) and his love to a beautiful young woman (Svitliana) is in the center of the novel.
