Vasily Makhn's novel The Eternal Calendar is a kind of Ukrainian chronicle, a large-scale family saga that combines, interweaves, co-ordinates and antagonizes the stories of several Ukrainian families from the seventeenth century to the present day. The background is a world history in which neither wars, nor betrayal, nor the eternal thirst for life have ever been lacking. The characters of Vasily Makhn's novel carry the traits of different generations, national characters and mentalities, resist time and circumstances, create and continue themselves, always affirming the eternal postulate: history does not really teach, it only makes sense.
