The action of this work takes place in Kyiv in the 70s of the last XXth century. The main characters - the criminal investigation inspector of the capital police, Captain Oleksa Syrota, and his teacher and chief, Lt. Col. Ivan Borysovych, nicknamed the Old Man encountered mysterious and brutal murders, the likes of which even veterans of criminal investigation could not recall. And one more strange circumstance: the KGB, which usually closely monitored all police investigations of high-profile criminal cases this time defiantly kept aloof. Immediately after the end of the case, even mentions of it in police reports were strictly classified. The investigative materials were partly destroyed, and the rest were taken to Moscow, where they disappeared in the bottomless archives of the Union Ministry of Internal Affairs. Therefore, the authors of the novel, the famous Ukrainian writers Valery and Natalya Lapikura, had to recreate a complex picture of those distant events in the literal sense of the word.
