The offered book contains two well-known works of the noted Russian writer Leo Tolstoy. The years of 1851-1854 that Tolstoy spent in the Caucasus and the events he witnessed there as an officer of the Russian Army are reflected in his novel "The Cossacks". In this work, completed in 1862, the author shares his inmost thoughts about the true value of human life, the virtue of common people, and the hypocrisy of the aristocratic society. The story "A Prisoner in the Caucasus" is based on the events of the Caucasian War of 1817-1864 waged by tsarist Russia.
