This is a novel by contemporary Bulgarian author Dobromir Baichev (born 1976), winner of the 10th Razvitie Competition for Novels and the 2019 Peroto Literary Award for Debut Work, and nominated for the Dimitar Dimov European Literary Award. "The Clay King" is an elegant pastiche of "Chess Story" by Austrian author Stefan Zweig. Instead of the Gestapo horrors of Nazi Germany, Baichev shows the cruel reality of the communist death camps. The novel is set almost entirely in the Belene Camp on the Bulgarian island of Persin in the Danube River. It is structured like a game of chess in which each character corresponds to a particular chess piece. Conceived as a film script and created by a film director, the book explores depths which a movie would never reach.
