"The City of Slow Motion" is a novel by the writer Anatoly Dnistrovoy, written in the early 2000s, which begins a trilogy about teenagers on the border between the Soviet and post-Soviet eras (the novels "Patsika", "Tibet on the Eighth Floor"). The action takes place in the early 1990s, a time of socio-economic collapse, hyperinflation and mass unemployment. The heroes of the novel are paracriminal teenagers from the street, children of the lumpen proletariat from the slums of the city. They live in a world where nothing prevents them from testing their cruelty, where there are no prospects for the future. This is one of the first novels in modern Ukrainian literature, in which the characters speak street language: slang, criminal jargon, slang. The first edition in 2003 became scandalous, causing a wave of indignation among the intelligentsia.
