The medical officer of a spa resort is one of the fundamental and, at the same time, exceptionally specific bodies, developing and operating within the administrative organization focused on managing the affairs of towns with spa status. This institution dates back to ancient traditions, and its development was influenced by the political and systemic changes occurring in Poland at various times. During this time, different structural models of state administration were formed, significantly influencing the transformations taking place in matters concerning health administration and management. Regardless of the various terminology used in legislation to refer to this physician, known as the local (spa, bathing, climate), then the local (spa), or finally the chief medical officer of a spa resort, the unquestionable common feature is the location (area) of his or her practice, i.e., the spa resort, and the closely related specific form of treatment, i.e., spa treatment.
