The author Toni Nikolov is a contemporary Bulgarian philosopher and journalist. Some of the essays in this book were first published in Nikolov's weekly column on Kultura.bg, a cultural news website where he has been editor-in-chief since 2012. He has been named a Knight of France's National Order of Merit. Nikolov says about his book: "It is possible for a nation to ignore the truth for a while, to complain, lament its lot and put all the blame on others, on history or on bad luck. But there comes a time when timelessness ends and the nation has to take a breath and open its eyes wide. What it sees may be devastating. But it's got to start somewhere."
