The book is written by Israel Joshua Singer, a well-known Yiddish novelist of the first half of the XXth century. It tells about the life of the brothers Ashkenazi in the late XIXth – the early XXth centuries. The novel takes place in the Polish city of Lodz, mostly among the large Jewish community that lived there before World War II.
