The history of escapes from communist Poland dates back to the first post-war months, i.e. the times when the final shape of its borders has not yet been determined, and the system of their protection basically did not exist. However, while the special conditions of this period allowed many people to leave the country relatively safely, as the regime strengthened, making a decision to escape illegally was often associated with a much greater risk than the risk of detaining the daredevil. However, this does not change the fact that over the next four decades, the citizens of the People's Republic of Poland tried to get behind the Iron Curtain in various ways.
