An attempt to lift the veil of oblivion from one of the greatest tragedies in the entire history of the Gulag – the Kengyr camp uprising, and to honor the forgotten rebels. This page of the history of the freedom struggle is often silenced or, even worse, presented by Russian propaganda as a criminal outbreak of violence, and the rebels as criminals. In the absence of an alternative and solid narrative from the side of the victims, it is necessary to patch up this gap in historical memory. Based on documents, memoirs, scientific research, and journalistic articles, the author presents a panorama of the bloody uprising, as well as a consistent chronology of events. Much attention is paid to the analysis of the causes and consequences of the uprising. The events are described without losing sight of the context, so the reader will also find general information about the Gulag. The book contains a separate chapter about Lithuanians imprisoned in Steplage and those who participated in the Kengyr Uprising. It provides a list of all Lithuanians imprisoned in Steplage (Pescianlage) by camp section.
