Scouting, as a global movement, has its roots in the early 20th century. The book traces the first steps of Scout groups in the Czech Lands, the development of their programs, as well as the conflicts and challenges that individual movements faced in the beginning. The author also maps German and Jewish organizations, Catholic Scouting, and national minority scouting. He describes the similarities and differences between Czech and German youth movements and does not neglect how these organizations served the political struggle.
