A highly original work! 'The Artist' is a story by the great Ukrainian writer, painter, philosopher and revolutionary Taras Shevchenko(1814-1861). Using the concrete facts of his biography and tinting them with a writer's fantasy, Snevchenko showed very convincingly the true life of a talented artist, who spent his childhood and youth in serfdom. The author paints a vivid picture of cultural life in St.Petersburg in the 1830s and 1840s recreating with visible warmth his happy years of study at the St.Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts and in the studio of Karl Brullov. The story's text is richly illustrated. Among two hundred and eighty illustrations the views of St.Petersburg are of special interest, works painted by Shevchenko while he was at the Academy and at the time of writing the story, works by Russian and Western European masters which influenced his development as a painter and engraver; rare documents and photographs.
