The book shows the main stages of the interwar Republic of Lithuania, its ups and downs. The brightest pages of the War of Independence and the armed struggle for the unity of the Lithuanian lands (1919–1923) are covered in detail. Considerable attention is paid to personal portraits of people who created a free Lithuania with a bayonet and a sword in the ranks of the Lithuanian Army and the Lithuanian Riflemen's Union, and built up the national armed forces in the postwar 1920s and 1930s.
