Modernity as a certain state of the world order is usually described as a set of certain institutions, procedures and norms. However, the distinctive feature of (our) modernity is the power of the negative - criticism, in word and deed, of everything whose "reasonableness" is not recognized by the subjective judgment of the inhabitants of modernity. In one of its manifestations, the power of the negative is the liberation struggle, which cannot be completed in any "final state of freedom" as long as modernity continues. In another of its manifestations, the power of the negative is the immanent "logic" of capital, which J. Schumpeter conveyed with the help of the concept of "creative destruction". In both of its manifestations, the power of the negative is curbed by certain (and changing in the course of the history of modernity) institutions, forms of culture and worldview, what the book generally calls "authorities". Such restraint, giving rise to contradictions, conflicts, high tensions between different tendencies of its movement in modernity, is at the same time a condition of the very possibility of the existence of a viable and developing society. The key question is: how exactly does the power of negativity of modernity affect authorities and transform them?
