This is a contrastive study of the systems of set comparisons in Bulgarian and French as part of the idiomatic stock of the two languages. It describes the most important structural, lexico-grammatical and semantic characteristics of set comparisons in both languages, viewing them as a major linguistic and cultural phenomenon which has preserved elements of the material, social and intellectual culture of the respective linguistic communities. A lexicographic appendix to the book features 2,714 set comparisons, including 1,549 Bulgarian and 1,165 French ones, and gives interpretative definitions for each of them.
