The book is about Vasil Vulchanov's eventful life as a sea captain. The main storyline revolves around the Bulgarian's secret and dangerous mission to Tripoli, where he unloaded precious cargo intended for the Algerian guerrillas. He also writes about his stint as first mate aboard an Italian tanker in the Aegean Sea in June 1941 during World War II. The tanker was torpedoed by a British submarine and Vulchanov was one of only two people to survive the attack. Another dangerous adventure happened in 1946-1947, when a sea storm forced him to seek safety in Greek waters. At that time, Greece was in the grips of civil war and was technically still at war with Bulgaria. The whole crew of Vulchanov's ship was arrested by the Greek authorities and after many months the sailors faced charges of espionage. They were afraid they would be sentenced to death... The thrilling stories in the book are fleshed out with descriptions of dramatic storms, beautiful evenings at sea and picturesque shores, distant or near. The complex relationship between fear and courage is presented in a compelling way.
