The work of the first Don historian Vasily Dmitrievich Sukhorukov (1795-1841) "Statistical description of the Land of the Don Cossacks" was written in 1827. Due to the disgrace of the author and the fact that this book was considered by the authorities as a collection of working materials for work on the "Regulations", it went into the archive for many years. Only towards the end of the twentieth century it came to the realization that the "Description" is a unique monument to the history of the Don Cossacks, and in 1891 this work was published. Since then, the book has never been republished, despite changes in political regimes.
