The offered monograph is the first attempt to analyze thoroughly the origin and development of the Cossack statehood. An effort to bring together all the achievements of the historians and researchers of the Russian Cossacks is carried out. The author marks certain historic peculiarities of the statehood on the Don River and in the Russian South, discloses stages of Cossack statehood development, makes a conclusion about a decrease in development in the course of civil war in the beginning of the XXth century.
