The book provides a summary of the history of the relationship between the Church and the state in the Baltic States. The Church in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia (as in all former republics of the Soviet Union) suffered greatly from the communist ideology, specific social administration and totalitarian relationship model prevailing for almost 50 years. Today in 2001 religious organisations at last will have an opportunity to apply to the Latvian Constitutional Court to prevent discrimination if their rights are impeded by state regulations.
