The author of the book is a great Russian Church historian and professor of Saint Petersburg Theological Academy Ivan Sokolov (1865-1939). The present volume combines his best works on the history of late Byzantium, which enable the reader to view many of the well-known phenomena and figures of Byzantine history from a different perspective: fates of monks-isihasts in the XIVth century, the place of isihia in Orthodox and oriental ascetic practices, unusual fate of a monk, scholar and theologian Nikifor Vlemmid, relations between the Church and state in the church policy of Emperor Isaac II Angel and many others.
