The proposed 14th edition of Hryhoriy Holoskevych's Orthographic Dictionary still attracts the reader's attention as the first type of such an edition in the history of our vocabulary, as the Dictionary created on the basis of the so-called Skrypnyk's orthography, which was strictly forbidden by the Soviet authorities, orienting the Ukrainian orthography to the traditions of Russian orthographic practice. It is a valuable monument to the tragic 20-30s of the twentieth century for our culture. The dictionary will partially help the thoughtful reader to answer numerous questions. For example: why was Hryhoriy Holoskevych's "Spelling Dictionary" unconditionally accepted by Ukrainians abroad? Why do some publications in Ukraine still use it today? Why do we have differences in the spelling of a number of words in our texts? Are the writings of Athens-Athens, laureate-laureate, joys-joys, Rus-Rus, iriy-iriy legalized by the new edition of the Ukrainian orthography contributing to the stabilization of orthographic norms? Why does the current spelling legitimize the spelling (and the corresponding pronunciation) of the words parish, Markian, Kuprian, but oblige to write the material, Julian, Adrian? The publication is intended for students of humanities, linguists, lexicographers, culturologists, historians. It testifies to our honor and gratitude to those who died for their convictions, fidelity to the native Word, for their sacrificial work for its establishment.
