The book offers a glimpse into the history of the Spassk region — a rich and complex past. At various times, territories that are now part of the Republic of Mordovia, as well as the Ryazan and Tambov regions, were administratively subordinated to Spassk. Numerous villages and settlements once belonged to this area: some no longer exist, while others are now included in the administrative divisions of the Penza Region and its neighboring territories.
At its peak, the population of the Spassk district (uyezd) reached approximately 417,000 people; today, it numbers just over 11,000.
