The monograph presents the main milestones in the development of the Spanish historical novel of the late 19th - early 21st centuries. The literary debates about the genre of the Spanish novel at the end of the 19th century, which had a socio-philosophical background, are analyzed, as well as attempts to theoretically understand the genre in the works of the largest Spanish literary historian M. Menendez y Pelayo. Separate essays present the most significant examples of historical novels by writers of the “generation of 1868” (A. de Escalante, J. M. de Pereda, E. Pardo Basan) and writers of the “generation of 1898” (M. de Unamuno, P. Barohi, R. del Valle-Inclana, Azorina), popular prose writer of the early twentieth century V. Blasco Ibáñez, the most famous of the modern Spanish postmodern writers - A. Perez Reverte.
