On the basis of historical and legal analysis, patterns of the development of the Russian judicial system, as well as legal proceedings at the stages of the Soviet, transitional and modern periods, are examined. A feature of the study is that the ongoing transformations of the judicial system and the justice system are analyzed not only in the light of legal prerequisites, but also in the political, social and economic situation taking shape in a certain historical period. This made it possible to identify complex dialectical connections between the elements, as well as to better understand the reasons for the ongoing legal reforms. In the research process, unique historical materials were used, including the State Archival Fund.
