The Huta Warszawa, put into operation in 1957, was one of the major investments of the six-year plan. The industrial proletariat was to be the social base of the political transformation in the country after World War II. In the 1960s and 1970s, Huta Warszawa was the showcase of Polish metallurgy. After the events of August 1980, the NSZZ "Solidarnosc" Trade Union Organization of the Employees of Huta Warszawa was one of the most numerous plant units in the Mazovia Region. The album shows the diverse activities of the steelworks' "Solidarnosc" from 1980 to 1989 – both legal, conducted until 13 December 1981, and underground, undertaken after the introduction of martial law. An important figure for the Warsaw steelworkers was their chaplain, Father Jerzy Popieluszko. After the priest's martyrdom, Huta Warszawa became a thriving centre for the development of his cult.
