The recent novel by the 2006 Nobel Prize-winning Turkish novelist Orhan Pamuk covers the conflict between Islamist and Western values in the modern Turkey. The contradiction between the regulations of the secular state and the Islamic tradition results into the suicide epidemic among young women, who protest in such a terrible way against the restriction on traditional hijabs. The main hero, a journalist and poet, investigates those obscure events in a provincial Turkish city, curtained off from the world by snow.
