The collective edition of Slovak folk songs by Bela Bartok in four volumes has the ambition to complete the almost century-old process of preparation, edition and complete publication of one of the largest individual collections of Slovak folk songs in history, created by ethnomusicologist and composer Bela Bartok. The collection of Slovak folk songs by Bela Bartok is the result of twelve years of collecting work, which was carried out by an ethnomusicologist and composer in the years 1906-1918, mainly in the Nitra, Hontian, Pohronska and Podpolian areas. He managed to record in writing 3,078 melodies, transcribed 145 songs from the phonograms of Marton Vikar from Povazie and received other records from Zoltan Kodaly and Anton Banik. After systematizing and preparing for the edition in three volumes (in 1922, 1924 and 1928), Bartok handed over the collection to Slovak Heritage Foundation and sought to publish it. Due to technical problems, disagreements with the editorial staff and finally due to the deteriorating socio-political situation, due to which Bartok left Europe in 1940, it was no longer published during his lifetime. The first, second and third volumes were published successively in 1959, 1970 and 2007 under the editorial guidance of Alice and Oskar Elschekov, who have the final fourth volume under development (intended by Bartok). The first three volumes contain all the records of folk melodies of this monumental collection, while the planned fourth volume will contain various additional material.
