A novel by Yordan Radichkov (1929-2004), arguably the most significant voice of Bulgarian literature in the last third of the 20th century. The village of Dolna Muka is hit by a downpour. The place is flooded, and a boy named Levachko goes missing. The only thing left of him is his diary, a blue notebook with the words "Look No Further!" inscribed on its cover. Levachko's guardian asks an acquaintance to help him find out why the boy has disappeared. "He and the mechanic hoped that... after the diary was read, the circumstances of Levachko's disappearance would become crystal clear, but it turned out quite the opposite." The diary reveals the story of a lonely boy who looks at the world with wide open eyes and records his impressions and thoughts about the hardships of living in the countryside. He tries to find his way in life, haunted by the thought that good doesn't always win. Radichkov wrote "Slingshot" in the late 1970s. Nowhere else does he share personal stories from his own childhood in such a straightforward way. This edition of the novel includes an afterword written by Radichkov in 1994.
