The monograph contains a unique collection of visual and analytical sketches, i. e. stories of ideas and technologies for cross-country travelling in northern/wintry conditions. All of them are united by a common principle of gliding: from ancient skis which are still a practical and efficient means of travelling to futuristic and almost forgotten “aerosleds” and “skimobiles”. The design immersion venture into the history and aesthetics of small-scale oversnow vehicles is accompanied by excursions into the environmental and functional contexts and study of the physico-mechanical properties of the snow cover and gliding over it. This publication is intended to be the starting point of a long journey for the team of authors who aspire to embed the “Arctic Design” domain in the Russian context. It also constitutes a special “data bank” for the forthcoming methodology of design for the Russian North.
