The book by a well-known Czech expert in semiotics, who continues traditions of the Prague structuralism, is dedicated to the structural and semiotic analysis of a wide range of artistic phenomena of the beginning of the XXth century. The author examines in detail the methodological basics of his approach, which seems to be especially appropriate for the vanguard, which in its turn changed not only the rules of art symbol’s construction, but also the idea of the symbol itself and of its status as well. Certain parts of the book are dedicated to the origin of vanguard and to comparison of its national schools. Among the characters of the research are not only poets (Khlebnikov, Kruchenyh), but also some great vanguard painters (Malevich, Filonov).
