Shakur Lama (?-1736) was the supreme lama of the Kalmyk Khanate from 1719 to 1736. In his youth, he was sent to study in Tibet, where he received education at Drepung Gomang Monastery and eventually became the kenpo-lama of the monastery. In 1719, at the request of Khan Ayuki, the Lama was sent to the Kalmyk Khanate. After the death of Khan Ayuki in 1724, Shakur Lama participated in the power struggle, supporting Ayuki's eldest son, Tseren-Donduk. In 1735, Khan Tseren-Donduk, Shakur Lama, and his entourage were expelled from the khanate after being defeated in an internecine power struggle. Shakur Lama died in St. Petersburg on May 8, 1736. The cremation ceremony for the lama took place three versts from the capital. The lama's ashes were sent to Tibet with another embassy. Author: Andrey Alekseevich Kurapov is Doctor of Historical Sciences.
