Célestin Damblond (1859–1924) was a Belgian professor of philology, specialist in Western European literature, and socialist politician. In his book Shakespeare: Lord Rutland (1912), he sought to shatter the myth of the man from Stratford and to prove, through a meticulous analysis of the facts, that the authorship of Shakespeare's legacy mainly belongs to Roger Manners, 5th Earl of Rutland. This book is the first translation of S. Damblond's research into Russian. It should be noted that the author does not limit himself to the Shakespearean theme; in his book, readers will find a detailed analysis of the literary and social life of the 18th and previous centuries. The work itself is perceived as a fascinating detective and educational story, and promises to become a necessary tool for specialists and students, as well as the general reading public.
