The Latvian Constitution states that four districts comprise the territory of the country, namely Vidzeme, Kurzeme, Zemgale, and Latgale. These are actually symbolic of four ancient Latvian tribes. But the division is far from being precise, as it fails to mention the fifth historical district called Selija. The considerable territories on the both banks of the Daugava river were occupied by Seli, the missing Latvian tribe that prospered in the 2-4 century. In the 6th century the people was pushed by a larger tribe named Latgalians. The historical development of the people and their native land has become a subject of investigation for the author, whose stories about famous people of Selija extraction present exciting reading materials.
