In September, 1988 a people action of an unexpected size took place in Latvia. The question about the attitude to the Latvian language status raised by the Soviet Youth newspaper publishers was answered by thousands of Latvians. Over 9,000 letters with 354,800 signatures addressed to the publishers contained the only request of official status for the Latvian language. Many of those letters are cited in the work.
