The monograph explores the culturological understanding of sacred meanings in Russian painting. From the point of view of the theory and history of culture, changes in the attitude to the Church as a sociocultural institution and in the perception of the concept of “sacred” led to the transformation of religious consciousness, which significantly influenced religious topics in Russian church and secular painting of the XIXth and early XXth centuries.
