The sources of mercifulness, charity and volunteerism in Russia can be found in the ancient times. Already in that period people demonstrated compassionate attitude towards the weak, the wretched, especially towards the old and children. Church played a great role in the formation of this attitude, but external factors, for example arable farming, cattle breeding and manufacturing, were of no less importance.
