The work is devoted to one of the significant aspects of the urgent problem of the formation of the Russian rhetorical school. The handwritten Latin rhetorical manuals compiled in Russia in the 18th century for use in pedagogical practice in religious and secular educational institutions were subjected to close analysis. The publication examines the features of the structure, methodological principles, sanctified sections of general and particular rhetoric in various manuals. The idea of the role of the Latin language in the education system in Russia in the 18th century is clarified.
