James Alexander (1803 – 1885) was a British diplomat and military man. He happened to visit many countries, carrying out delicate orders. In 1829 Alexander came to Russia and by personal authority of Nikolai left St. Petersburg for the Balkans via Novgorod, Moscow, Tula, Kharkov, Odessa and Sevastopol. He was the first English traveler to mention personal meetings with A. S.Pushkin. Basing on his life experience, he wrote about 20 books, but none of them had been translated into Russian before the present one.
