The book analyzes the relationship between Russia and the Western countries. The author considers the problem of the Russian identity in the system “the West – the East” and explains why the Russian society within the framework of this system split into two movements “westernism/ pochvennichestvo (Return to the Soil)”. The representatives of the first one believed that Russia's development depends upon the adoption of Western European technology and liberal government. The second movement stressed a strong desire to return to the idealized past of Russia's history, and was driven towards anti-Europeanization.
