Through the prism of ethnonymic characteristics, the peculiarities of the national identification of Galician Ukrainians in the 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries, which reflected the socio-political and ethno-cultural situation in the region, were revealed. The discourse on the choice of a name to designate the Ukrainian people among various political currents, clergy, academic circles, youth associations, etc. was analyzed. It is shown how with the growth of national self-awareness the terms "Rusyn", "Russian", "Russian", which during the 19th century were used to refer to representatives of Ukrainians in the Galician territories, on the eve and during the First World War, and even more so - the Ukrainian revolution of 1917–1921, are gradually being replaced by the ethnonym "Ukrainian", which becomes the name of the modern Ukrainian nation. The gradual replacement of the term "Rusyn" by the counterpart "Ukrainian" in the definition of Ukrainians of Galicia is helped to reveal the names received from other peoples - Poles, Germans, Jews, etc., who also inhabited this region.
