This book provides a West-European view on the role of Roman law tradition in the formation and development of private law in Russia from the XIXth to the beginning of the XXth centuries. The publication focuses on the key moments of Roman law reception in the Russian Empire, its connection with learning and teaching of Roman and civil law, the role of court reform of 1864, and state policy in the sphere of juridical enlightenment. Particular attention is drawn to the influence of Romance studies on the Soviet Russian law thought.
