In 1905, the first anti-autocratic revolution took place in Russia. It is clear that it has been prepared for decades by the entire Russian liberation movement, starting with the populist socialists and liberals of the 1860s. In the 1890s, Marxists and Social Democrats joined them in Russia. In the 1900s, Marxists (the Iskra newspaper), social liberals (the Osvobozhdeniye magazine), and socialist revolutionaries (the Revolutionary Russia newspaper) began active campaigning from abroad.
