The history of Tbilisi is rich in legends, oral traditions and real history. It is so rich and beautiful that legends are often mistaken for reality and passed on as history. And sometimes reality turns out to be so implausible that it is told to guests, friends, children, adorned with the halo of a legend. Old Tbilisi is the case when legend and reality are intertwined together, equally warming and delighting our imagination. And this especially happens when we look at photographs of old Tbilisi. The construction of what is preserved in photographs as we know it began much earlier, in a time when photography did not yet exist, and history was preserved only in old newspapers, archives, works of art and biographical works. Accordingly, if the city captured in photographs of the late 19th and early 20th centuries is called “Old Tbilisi,” then the events described in this book, colorfully speaking, refer to “old, old Tbilisi.”
