The author considers one of the brightest Russian cultural events of the XXth-century - discovery of authentic Russian icon painting and other types of Old Russian fine arts: murals in ancient temples, embroidery and miniatures in manuscripts. Discovery, study and restoration of icons, conducted by such cult figures as N.Kondakov, I.Grabar', A.Anisimov, Iu.Chirikov are viewed in connection with changing social-political, scientific, and cultural situation.
