The monograph presents the results of the research of the ecosystem of relict lake Mogil’noye (Kildin island in the Barents Sea), carried out in 1997-2000 by PINRO (Polar Research Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanography) scientists with the participation of specialists of a number of research institutions in Russia. The edition presents the results of the complex hydrological, biohydrochemical, hydro biological, microbiological, parasitological and ichthyological studies. The characteristics of a catchment area of the lake, the levels of anthropogenic pollution of water, sediments and tissues of the Kildin cod are provided and the productivity of bacterio-, phyto-and zooplankton is estimated. It is also shown that the main primary source of organic matter in the lake ecosystem is a bacterial synthesis.
