The book was first published in 1926. The author Daniil Yurukov says that when he studied history at school, he instinctively felt the falsehood of the theory that the Bulgarians are of Tatar origin. Later on, the so-called mixed theory of Marin Drinov didn't satisfy him either. Yurukov's 30-month stay in Skopje and Seres and his knowledge of the three main Bulgarian dialects eventually helped him find what he considered to be the truth about the origin of the Bulgarians, which he presented in this book.
