The book includes memoirs, records and conversations by, with and about Stefan Bogdanov (1910-1986), a Bulgarian communist functionary who spied for the Soviet Union but later became a dissident. Bogdanov was the first chief of Section B (Counterintelligence) in the State Security Council, the secret political police in communist Bulgaria. He was the only collaborator of the Soviet military intelligence in Bulgaria who left written memoirs. He was used as a scapegoat during purges carried out by the Communist Party. He was one of only two Communist Party members to write shocking accounts about the excesses of the regime. These circumstances make Bogdanov's memoirs unique.
